Dan Lam American, b. 1988
"Natural processes inspire my work, and then I use those natural processes with synthetic or unnatural materials to create a natural process within the studio. I think there is a tension between these seemingly organic objects being made with completely inorganic materials." - Dan Lam
Dan Lam is an internationally recognized artist based in Texas whose work combines playful shapes, textures and colors with darker metaphysical themes best known for her strange, brightly colored "drippy" sculptures. Made of painted polyurethane foam and often covered in spikes, her blob-like pieces that appear to melt and drip have brought Lam hordes of social media fans.
Lam began experimenting with the possibilities of foam after receiving her MFA from Arizona State University, and she has continued to test its limits by scaling up. While her pieces appear otherworldly, Lam steadily draws inspiration from the everyday, taking cues from nature and the human body.
Dan Lam is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry best known for her strange, brightly colored "drippy" sculptures. Using non-traditional inorganic materials such as polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and epoxy resin, she creates sculptures that resemble alien organisms, genuinely extraterrestrial in their composition. Embracing the chaotic behavior of her chosen materials, Lam plays the role of a mad scientist in her studio, creating her mouthwatering, otherworldly sculptures through intuition and play with careful control. Her finished work oozes over itself, gushing over shelf ledges, holding space for sensations of desire and disgust.
Lam has exhibited at venues across the US, from San Francisco to New York, and worldwide in Paris and Munich. Lam has collaborated with prominent companies, including Facebook and Virgin, and renowned art producers Meow Wolf, and her work has appeared on the pages of Architectural Digest, Travel and Leisure, and Forbes. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in 2010 and her Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University in 2014.
Lam lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
