Home Cooking : A solo exhibition by Davariz Broaden
"It’s this base layer for who we are and what we can become. This thing that’s filled with memory & potential. That feeling of belonging. ‘Home Cooking’ is a series that expresses all these things through gesture, remembrance & figuration.” - Davariz Broaden
Square One Gallery is proud to present "Home Cooking" , a solo exhibition by Detroit based artist & painter Davariz Broaden, in collaboration with Louis Buhl & Co. The exhibition will be on view from March 14th - April 18th with the opening reception held at Square One Gallery March 14th, from 6-9pm CST
Commonly using a muted color palette, Davariz Broaden’s (b. 1999) paintings distill a soft essence and highlight the importance of love and beauty within the Black community, as well as nostalgic events in the Black experience. Broaden’s flourishing craft pursues the rich tradition of figurative painting, while the warm energy exuded throughout his work manifests itself onto the viewer with ease.
“‘Home Cooking’ has less to do with food, and more to do with the ease and comfortable feeling you get when eating a home cooked meal. I wanted to create a series that made you feel warm - an intimate body of work that brings you back home, whatever or wherever that is; that reassurance that you always have this safe haven amongst everything else. It’s this base layer for who we are and what we can become. This thing that’s filled with memory & potential. That feeling of belonging. ‘Home Cooking’ is a series that expresses all these things through gesture, remembrance & figuration.” - Davariz Broaden
At the heart of Broaden’s practice is a celebration: of his love for painting, of his ability to create freely, of the greater sense of self that comes with age. Within his creations, figures gather in moments of simple joy and togetherness—dancing, playing sports, relaxing, exploring. Honing in on his attempt of “freeing himself” from inherent societal constraints, Broaden combines oil and acrylic paint in his works on canvas and paper, resulting in the emergence of loose brushwork while still managing to remain true to his traditional style of portraiture.
Broaden has been selected as the inaugural Detroit Tyrrell Winston Art Scholarship artist-in-residence with global clothing brand Stone Island for the 2024/2025 season.
