When Max Berman, artist Ted Collier, and Tanner Steslow, above, decided to open Square One Gallery in St. Louis, they chose to locate in the Central West End. Steslow and Berman said they were drawn to the architecture and the energy of the neighborhood. “It reminds us of living and working in Brooklyn and is one of the most vibrant neighborhoods we’ve seen in any American city.” Collier added: “We wanted to be in close proximity to the gallery community and elevate and magnify the CWE on the international art scene. We also want to give St. Louis some well-deserved and overdue attention.”
How these three became partners is fascinating, snd will be the subject of a future post. To give you a hint of what’s to come: Steslow and Berman were curating a group show at Tambaran 2 Gallery on New York’s Upper East Side and invited Collier, whom they had found on Instagram, to participate. They continued working on projects together and Square One Gallery has become their latest venture.
Square One’s first exhibition, Time After Time, features the work of Kansas City-based artist Sage Barnes (bio here). The opening is scheduled for Friday, April 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Pierce Arrow Building at 4814 Washington, just east of Euclid.
